Prevalence of burnout syndrome in small species veterinarians

Abstract

Objective: To determine the prevalence and percentage of veterinarians in Cuenca in 2022 who are dedicated to small species and develop burnout syndrome during their work in veterinary centers and relate the sociodemographic indicators with the presence of the syndrome in these professionals. Methodology: The Maslach Questionnaire was applied to fifty-three professionals. This study is presented based on a quantitative method. Results: The validity of the questionnaire was studied using a Cronbach's α test, obtaining a high reliability value of 0.731.  The report shows that out of all the cases, there are individuals who reach a 75% of the values on the scale for Burnout syndrome. Within the correlation of the syndrome and sociodemographic indicators, the female sex was observed as more prone to develop the syndrome. Conclusions: The study population demonstrated compliance with the three dimensions, although not simultaneously, it was determined that there are professionals who suffer from burnout syndrome in Cuenca. The prevalence has values: 16.98% for exhaustion, 16.98% for depersonalization and 41.51% for lack of personal fulfillment. Among the sociodemographic factors under study, it was observed that the female sex is more vulnerable with significant values ​​in emotional exhaustion. In addition, individuals between 22-35 years of age, divorced people, and people with lower economic remuneration, are at higher risk.
